Commercial and Office

Commercial enterprises can become landmarks that define a cityscape where business and commerce is conducted. For greater than 60 years the Farmer Group of Companies has been pouring the foundation of many commercial projects throughout the Capital Region, Vancouver Island and the lower mainland.

Often one of the more interesting and challenging aspects of multi-story construction is the work in the ground. Our experienced associates are capable of creating “in-house” much of the conceptual design associated with the shoring, underpinning and seismic restraint anchors commonly required for these types of structures, thus enabling us to minimize the time and cost to complete this work.

Not limited to retail and office spaces, hotels and resorts also enhance our vibrant commercial communities.

Island Savings Credit Union

The Sovereign

This modern boutique style residential and commercial property features an automobile elevator that descends two levels into the clay and bedrock of Victoria’s city center. As the General Contractor for this urban community project, we were excited to see its completion the end of August 2013.

Parkside Victoria Resort and Spa

Within walking distance of downtown Victoria and steps from historic St. Ann’s Academy, Parkside’s three story glass and green rooftop atrium is now home to Victoria’s historic Crystal Gardens exotic plant collection and helps insulate the building against the chill of the winter and heat of the summer months. The project, completed in 2009, is targeting LEED Platinum status and is one of Canada’s first hotel and resort developments to have installed electric car charging terminals in the parking garage. Two concrete residential condominium towers compliment the main resort. Farmer, as the Construction Manager built this $53M project.

Richard Blanchard Building

As Construction Manager selected by British Columbia Building Corporation we managed the refurbishment of the building that is the Ministry of Health. To complete the project the existing building was stripped to basic structure and a new high performance curtain wall glazing system containing portions of photovoltaic panels was installed, as well as seismic dampers and a new electrical, data and mechanical systems.

The Vogue on Government

located at 1450 Government Street, the century old Albion Ironworks timber frame warehouse and office building was converted into loft condominiums and ground floor commercial space for Mountain Equipment Co-op. Seismic upgrades included large concrete transfer beams installed in the basement to facilitate the removal of central timber columns to allow a drive isle for underground parking. Featured in the property’s courtyard design are cast iron panels from Victoria’s historic Driard Hotel (1892) and art deco terra cotta frieze, a 1930’s artifact recovered by the City of Victoria when Kresge’s Department store was demolished in 1989.

Coast Harbourside Hotel and Residences

Completed in 1991, this Coast Hotel and two adjacent condominium towers round out Laurel Point in James Bay. The marina has grown with and complements this waterfront community in Victoria harbour.

Wickaninnish Inn

Retained as the Construction Manager, Farmer built the “5 Star” complementary Wickaninnish on the Beach, an addition to the existing property exclusive to the Relais and Chateau chain of inns.

Union Centre

Trade tendered prices exceeded the owner’s budget but the architectural concrete precast cladding elements originally proposed where completed by a concrete cast-in-place method introduced by Farmer resulting in significant cost savings and with pleasing results to the owner.

Canadian Auto Workers Union Hall, New Westminster BC

Built on the slopes of the Fraser River in New West, the CAW Union Hall is clad in glass and metal panels.
